Out Now: Our 2023 Single Vineyard Wines
Our 2023 Single Vineyard (Ried) Smaragd wines have arrived. The 2023 vintage is expressive and impressively complex, combining a dense texture with balance, elegance, and profound juiciness on the palate.
The complex terroir of the Wachau demands meticulous work by our vignerons in every parcel of the vineyard. They must consider different elevations, different weather conditions depending on how far east or west or whether the Ried is on the right or left side of the Danube, the direction the vineyard faces, and of course the makeup of the soils. A dedication to small detail is crucial. The Domäne Wachau structure helps with this. On average, each of our vignerons cultivates less than 2 hectares, typically by hand, allowing them to focus closely on each individual parcel and the micro-terroir found there.
Our 2023 Ried Smaragd wines are especially good at recounting their origins. On the whole, they are presenting a bit rounder and riper than in previous years. The wines are notably juicy and concentrated, with expressive aromas and inviting charm. Our Smaragd bottles benefited from the optimal conditions in October, and show complexity, nuance, and balance. They have a sublime body and pair a delicate and elegant texture with dense structure.
The choice to avoid a late harvest was intentional, seeking a racy and taut structure in the wines and avoiding too much body and the influence of Botrytis. This proved a particularly wise decision in 2023, as the weather took a very rainy turn in November and would have made for a messy end to harvest. We’re looking forward to wines with a vital and vibrant acidity despite the warm autumn. The harvest concluded with the single sites Schön and Brandstatt, both in the Spitzer Graben, on 31 October 2023.
